Mrs. Handley

    Dear Parents;

    Wow, it’s re-enrollment time!  It’s unbelievable that this school year is almost over.  As we look toward the 2010-2011, school year many of you are wondering if your child is ready to move on in preschool or if they need the “gift of time”.   The “gift of time” means you are considering the difference between your child’s chronological age and their developmental age.
    Developmental age is the age at which the child functions socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually.  A child’s developmental age may or may not correspond with their chronological age.  Arnold Gesell, the father of child development, determined that human behaviors develop in a patterned way through predictable stages.  Each individual will go through these stages at his/her own pace.
    Recognizing at what age children are functioning developmentally allows us to adjust our expectations and choose the most appropriate environment for healthy growth and learning.  Some factors to consider when deciding if the “gift of time” is best for your child would be; premature birth, trauma at birth, summer birthday, boys on average mature slower than girls, and the child’s uniqueness(individuality).
    If you are concerned about your child and would like to schedule a meeting to discuss his/her development, please feel free to call me at 442-7457 ext. 322.

    In Him,

    Sandra Handley
